PolyMag™ Plastic Separator

Polymag™ additives bring metal detectability, X-Ray contrast and magnetic susceptibility into plastic mouldings.

PolyMag™ Plastic Separator

The PolyMag™ process was developed as part of Eriez’ commitment to reducing waste in the processing industry.

Eriez PolyMag additive is a non-dusting pellet which allows plastic moulders and extruders to produce metal detectable and X-Ray visible plastic parts. Moulders can satisfy varying levels of detectability at a cost substantially less than specialty compounds. This eliminates the need to buy minimum quantities of special resins and carry excess material inventory. The process is suitable for co-moulding, over-moulding, and sequential blow moulding.

How does it work?

The plastic resin is rendered magnetic by the inclusion of an additive in the form of high concentration free-flowing pellets during the manufacturing process - similar to a colour concentrate.

The case for manufacturing scrap: Components or assemblies often consist of more than one type of plastic bonded together and because no automated method of grinding and segregating the different types of plastics exists, reject components are simply thrown away. In the Polymag process a dose of less than one per cent of the PolyMag additive is fed into co-moulded resins using a standard additive feeder or colour auger. The production rejects that occur from start-up, process variations or design changes are then granulated using a standard plastics granulator. The regrind material can then be run through a high sensitivity metal separator, allowing the reprocessing of the expensive resin.  Click here to read technical article on the Magnetic Separation of Santoprene Thermoplastic Vulcanizate using the PolyMag process.

The case for the food industry: Polymag™ is used as a protective solution in the food industry. Major restaurant chains now insist that food processors utilise plastic and rubber articles that are metal and X-Ray detectable. This has become part of many company's HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) programs. The inclusion of Eriez Polymag additive during the manufacturing process of the plastic moulding ensures that if fragment of plastics contaminate food product, they can be identified by metal detection equipment.
